Questions and answers

These are the questions people ask most about Yila Mahjong, answered in plain words from how the game really works today.

Is every board in Yila Mahjong solvable?

Yes. Every board is dealt solvable by construction: the generator builds each board backwards, so the removal order it recorded is a real solution, and a separate solver re-checks every board before it is used. The same "is this tile free?" rule is used when the board is made and when you play, which is why the guarantee holds at play time.

What happens if I get stuck?

Nothing bad. There is no game over. If a board has tiles left and no legal moves, the game rescues it for free by rewinding past positions no shuffle could save, then reshuffling. In tray mode, a full tray of unmatched tiles gets a free shuffle, and a rescue is never tied to an ad.

What is the difference between tray mode and classic mode?

In tray mode, the default, you tap a free tile and it flies into a 4-slot tray, and two of the same tile in the tray clear automatically. In classic mode you tap two matching free tiles to clear them. You switch in Settings with the Tray mode switch, and the change applies to your next game.

Why is the daily challenge always classic mode?

Because the leaderboard checks runs by replaying classic moves. The daily plays classic tap-two whatever your mode setting. Tray mode games are not recorded, so they never feed the leaderboard.

About the daily challenge

How does the leaderboard stop cheating, and what can it not stop?

The server replays every posted run with the same game engine and ranks only runs that genuinely clear the board. It works out the score itself, rejects copies of someone else's run, and rejects runs faster than 200 milliseconds per match. What it cannot stop is a scripted player that really solves the board and posts a fast time that looks plausible, so we do not call it cheat-proof.

Does my score ever reset?

No. Your lifetime score is banked once when you win and never resets, and badges are permanent. One thing does restart: the daily streak counter goes back to 1 if you miss a day, while the daily gift calendar forgives missed days.

Are there ads in Yila Mahjong?

No ad network is connected, and the web build shows no ads of any kind. The ad rules are written into the game as hard limits: at most one forced ad every 4 levels, none before level 4, reward ads opt-in only, and never an ad on a stuck board. Right now the Shop's opt-in reward button grants its boosters straight away without showing an ad.

Can I buy coins or anything else with real money?

No. Coins cannot be bought with real money, and there is no real-money purchase anywhere in the current build. You earn 20 coins for every level you clear and 10 coins per star, and you spend them on boosters, tile skins and garden ornaments at fixed prices.

How coins work

How do Flowers and Seasons match?

Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. The four Flowers are Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum and Bamboo Flower, and the four Seasons are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. All other tiles must match exactly, and together there are 42 faces.

Is there a mobile app?

Yila Mahjong plays in a web browser, and an Android version exists as an installable test build, version 0.1.0, installed by sideloading. It is not on Google Play or in any app store, and there is no iOS build.

Do I need an account to play?

No. There is no account, no sign-in and no email address. Your progress is saved in your browser's local storage on your own device, and for the daily leaderboard the game sends a random device ID that is not tied to your name, email or phone.

Can I play offline?

Yes. The Android test build plays fully without a connection, and the daily still plays on a board worked out on your device, but that run is unranked and the game says "Offline, playing today's board unranked". Only the ranked daily needs the leaderboard server.

Who made the tile artwork?

Classic Brush and Dynasty are the game's own drawings, and Heritage is an open-licence set by FluffyStuff, released into the public domain (CC0 1.0). Credit is not legally required, but the game gives it as a courtesy: "Mahjong tile face artwork by FluffyStuff (github.com/FluffyStuff/riichi-mahjong-tiles), CC0 1.0 Universal (public domain)."

What comfort and accessibility options are there?

Settings has real switches for Tray mode, Sound effects, Vibration feedback, Calm mode (softer effects), Extra-large tiles (on by default) and Colour-blind patterns, which add a small corner pattern per suit so suits never rely on colour alone. The game works in portrait and landscape.
